2020 Gold Medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) for the 2018-19 edition of the publication that was themed “Bang.” In addition to the medal, the magazine was awarded All Columbia Honors for each of the three sections of the judging criteria: Publication Essentials, Verbal Content and Visual Content. Of a possible 1,000 points, Solstice received a total score of 980. The CSPA judges who reviewed and rated the publication said that it is “a magazine to be emulated. Both the writing and art are consistently high quality, polished pieces. Your staff and school have developed high standards of excellence. The layout is stunning and seamless, bringing together writing and art.”
Theme of the Year: Bang! The word bang brings to mind sudden movements, frenzy, and loud noises. Solstice aims to reflect this through vibrant, chaotic, and unexpected design. However, Bang also encompasses emotion, passion, and dynamic energy. It encapsulates universal experiences, and is applicable not only to powerful personal moments, but also to the changing, spontaneous nature of the world at large. Though works in the magazine were not selected to draw upon the theme, we challenge our readers to find beauty in the chaos, and to use Bang as a stepping stone to make an impact of their own.
